Filmvisning “Walking into the Unknown” med Dr. Arne Vainios föreläsning

En film om mäns hälsa visas på torsdagen den 26.8.2010 klo 18.00 på Kulturhuset Grand i Borgå, adress Biskopsgatan 28.
Filmen handlar om en medelålders amerikansk läkare som inte sköter sin egen hälsa, som inte själv följer de råd han ger åt sina patienter. Filmen *Walking into the Unknown har väckt stor uppmärksamhet och fått pris, den var också nominerad för Emmy-priset år 2009. Efter filmen berättar Dr. Vainio om sina erfarenheter och också om hur det är att vara “Finndian”. Dr Arne Vainios far var son till en finsk immigrant och hans mor var Ojibwe-indian.

“Emmy nominated documentary, “Walking into the Unknown”, traces the intimate journey of a middle aged American Indian male through the health care system as he gains a deeper understanding of himself and the health risks he faces. *Dr. Arne Vainio* is an Ojibwe physician who works on the Fond du Lac Reservation in northern Minnesota. Frustrated by middle-aged Native men not coming in for health screenings, he came to the realization that he was also avoiding the necessary screenings. The program is based on *Dr. Arne Vainio’s* 49th and 50th years of life, a critical turning point in the lives of many American Indian males when it is important to become earnestly involved in finding out more about the ways in which their health and well being are at risk and developing ways to practice healthier choices.
Several powerful testimonials from community members who have experienced the premature loss of Native men in their families are included along with several diagnostic tests that are experienced and explained from the patient’s perspective.”
